My postgraduate thesis was an appraisal of the Metropolitan Green Belt and investigated whether a compromise could be achieved in relation to maintaining this policy whilst also exploring how the necessary housing provisions could be realised. Having been born and raised in London, I have witnessed the considerable growth it has continued to experience. I welcome this more than anyone, however, one of the most imperative issues associated with this growth is where can these masses live? London is an expansive city but it is also heavily regulated and space is, although not running out per se, is becoming harder to find due to a number of significant factors that I aim to discuss. One of the UK’s most celebrated planning policies throughout the past century has been the introduction and regulation of the Green Belt, this is the crux that my thesis focuses on.
